Don't let the Univisión folks fool you. The youth of Latino L.A. love their two languages — fuck English and Spanish monolinguals. Proof #32: the bilingual bands that jammed the Roxy Sunday night. Opening was Juguete, four guys and a strong-voiced gal all channeling the Gail Harris-led Wailers through an emo vibe. They added sparkle to their peppily downbeat chords with judiciously administered keyboard and tambourine shakes.

Following was the grrrl-rific punk of Eastside muchachas Go Betty Go. Their only problem also happens to be their most alluring feature: lead singer Nicollete Vilar. Tonight, the ingénue was Gwen-ning a bit too much, letting her bouncing breasts speak louder than her growls. But the rest of the outfit picked up where Vilar showed off too much with their always-stellar lead-pipe rat-tat-tats. (Note to bassist Michelle Rangel: Can we go to prom together?) Ending the estrogen extravaganza were Pastilla and their knee-bopping laments. On the eve of a new album, the group are finally feeling comfortable in the Big Rock Group outfit that has been theirs for the fitting since forever. Their new songs built upon their best features — the closed-eyes weeps of lead singer/guitarist Victor Monroy, manly drums commanding everyone to listen, and harmonies borrowed from Liverpudlians of days past. Now if only their label would promote them properly . . .

Miami pound machine Volumen Cero's sweaty mop-top rock was at its strutting best, the band slowing their guitar and vocal reverbs only to acknowledge swooning fans. After the particularly charming "Luces," singer Luis Tamblay grabbed a black bra a buxom babe had thrown onstage. "Someone lost something!" he gleefully proclaimed to the audience, who wolf-whistled in appreciation. Then Volumen went back to work — they had a house to tear down. (Gustavo Arellano)

5TH Anniversary Celebration Saturday August 24th, The Roxy in Hollywood

Los Angeles, August 8, 2002 – Eclectica Productions and Vesper Public Relations are proud to announce Tijuana's latest break-out stars, ALMALAFA, 5th Year Anniversary Celebration, while simultaneously packing their bags to hit Chicago. ALMALAFA plans to celebrate with its L.A. fans with a very special show at The Roxy on Saturday August 24 2002.

A 5th Year Anniversary for ALMALAFA marks a constant ‘border-trespassing’ between the United States and Mexico. The band has toured extensively throughout the West Coast and has performed numerous times in Mexico’s primary markets: Mexico City, Guadalajara, garnering an enormous fan base whom have coined the term ‘Mexican Ska,’ a contagious musical ‘gospel’ that they have spread on their bi-national spree.

ALMALAFA’s 5th Year Celebration, is part of the band’s "Psicodelic Ska Tour," which kicked off on February 2002 in support of their latest release, Psicodelic Ska (Opcion Sonica U.S.A.). This very special concert will be followed by performances throughout Chicago, early September, where ALMALAFA will be headlining Chicago's first ever-Mexican Ska Festival. The tour will culminate in November with a two-week tour in the works through German based BERSEE RECORDS who is scheduled to release Psicodelic Ska in the Fall. The German dates include the following cities: Hannover, Hamburg, Munich, Potsdam, Frankfurt, and Berlin.

Formed in 1997 ALMALAFA is an eight-piece ensemble that hails from "The Last Corner of Latin America", Tijuana, Baja California. The band is highly influenced by artists like Mano Negra, Desorden Publico, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Skatalities and the Jamaican Reggae vibe. Over the course of their career the band has developed a unique and powerful sound that blends Afro-Latin rhythms with reggae, danzon, world beat and ska while expressing the day-to-day experiences of border life.

One of the most active bands in today's burgeoning Latin Alternative music scene, ALMALAFA has toured throughout California in prestigious L.A. rock 'n' roll venues like the Roxy Theater, El Rey Theater, The Key Club, The Troubadour, Whiskey A-Go-Go, JC Fandangos and Club Fais Do Do. The band has also performed throughout Northern California and in Mexico City where they performed in the Skandalo Nacional festival (1999) before a crowd of over 20,000 music fans. The band returned to Mexico City this past May co-headlining with Mexican top Latin Alternative bands Sekta Core and Salon Victoria performing in front of 5,000 "skankers" at Salon 21. Their intense live performances and passionate music, has earned ALMALAFA the title of "Tijuana's Most Important Band" for two years in a row by the influential Frontera newspaper.

While ALMALAFAS has always seen itself as a border ensemble, the band began to make its mark in the U.S. with the release of Psicodelic Ska. Originally released in 2000 by Opcion Sonica in Mexico (and re-released in the U.S. on 2001 on Opcion Sonica USA), The album has earned critical praise from publications like La Banda Elastica, Al Borde, No Cover, Nuestro Rock, and Below the Surface, among others. The anthem, "Matar", a crowd favorite on both sides of the border and, "Mexico Libre", are on constant rotation on MORE FM, the most influential Rock en Español station in the Tijuana/San Diego area.

Ok. bueno 1-2. Comenzamos.
En nombre de la gran corporación que es Eventos Espaciales Ecléctica, les doy la bienvenida e introducción a este blogger, creo que es muy necesario este tipo de espacios, para esos pequeños eruptos mentales, que siempre se hablan o se platican y se quedan allí suspendidos en el aire.
Este será un intento más de pasar información de manera más rápida a la comunidad musical que rodea a Ecléctica, así que los comentarios en este blogger serán relacionados con este tema tan vasto.(según yo también iniciare otro blogger solo para los eruptos personales de Jorge Leal, pero...ya veremos).
Ahora lo básico, ¿Qué jodidos es Ecléctica?
Eventos Espaciales Ecléctica (su nombre oficial) es una entidad dedicada a organizar, promover "tocadas", conciertos, happenings, parties y una que otra visita a antros de mala muerte y strip joints. También hace el booking de algunos grupos de la Alta y Baja California.
Fundada en 1999, por Jorge Leal (o sea yo) Ecléctica realizado un mogollón de conciertos -más de 100 last time I checked- en una variedad de lugares de Los Angeles, en los cuales han participados la mayoría de los grupos locales de L.A.(de rock latino, spanish rock,etc,etc) así como grupos internaciones como: Bersuit, King Changó, Panteón Rococó, El Otro Yo, La Gusana Ciega, Zurdok,Sol D' Menta, Wisecräcker, Nana Pancha, Wahalla, Un Kuartito y un etc más.
El motivo siempre es el mismo más allá de la posible remuneración economica, esta el poder realizar un evento con buena música y que muestre que la vía independiente es posible.(Ecléctica no tiene el apoyo de ningún patrocinador corporativo que te "anime" a comprar jeans, stereos, o que te dicte si debes fumar o no, o que te restrege el logo de su cerveza, ¿esto puede cambiar? sí, pero is unlikely), en si un evento ecléctica es algo hecho por un melomano y fan de la música, que lo quiere disfrutar igual que aquel que gasto sus últimos $10 en entrar y que ya no trae para más o aquella que acabar de ir a cambiar su paycheck y se quiere reventar.
El asunto es pasarsela bien y crear momentos memorables con buena música, que nos diga algo o que nos haga sentir que somos parte de algo ¿o no?.
